Community health workers can use the new Road to Health booklet to help get the most out their time with caregivers and children, whether at the clinic or at the child’s home.

Use the booklet to prepare for your visits and lead discussions with caregivers.

  • Share information
At each visit choose a theme to go through with the caregiver. Help the mother or caregiver understand the messages and answer any questions. If there is time, you can cover other themes as well.

Make sure the caregiver understands the Danger Signs that will let her know that her child needs to get help urgently.

Tools are being developed to help you structure well-child visits around the five core themes in the future.

  • Measure
Measure and record the child’s mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) and take action if needed.
  • Immunisation and routine treatments
Check if any immunisations, routine treatments or tests are due. Provide these during the visit if you can, otherwise make sure that the child comes to the clinic.
