It’s an important warning sign for pre-eclampsia
Ask mom if she feels the baby moving regularly. This is an important way to monitor baby’s health . First-time moms (primigravida) can usually feel fetal movements from 20 weeks, or from 16 weeks if she has been pregnant before (multigravida).
A fetus should move at least 4 times in one hour. However, a healthy fetus may stop moving for a short time while sleeping.
Encourage mom to be aware of movements so that she can monitor the condition of her fetus herself. The best time to monitor fetal movements is after supper when mom can relax and be aware of her fetus moving. The so-called “kick count” should include all fetal movements, including rolling and turning movements.
A sudden decrease in fetal movements to 3 or less per hour may be a sign of fetal distress. Advise the mother that if this happens, she should urgently go to her nearest maternity clinic or hospital. Here a CTG and ultrasound examination will further assess the condition of the fetus.
What does the movement feel like? How do mothers describe it?
