Recommendations for breastfeeding are now the same for HIV-negative mothers and for moms living with HIV.

The guidelines

Encourage all moms:

  • To exclusively breastfeed for the first 6 months
  • To continue breastfeeding and to introduce complementary solid foods after 6 months
  • To make sure to give enough nutritious complementary foods
  • To continue breastfeeding up to two years or longer

Exclusive breastfeeding means breastmilk only – no added water, formula, juice or solids. Baby can have prescribed medicines or supplements.

No early solids

Advise parents to wait until 6 months before introducing solids, no matter what the mother’s HIV status.
